SUMMARY:Professor Marian Holness - The Trinity Cobbles\, a Story of Plate Tectonics
DESCRIPTION:The cobbled area outside the Great Gate of Trinity College may seem very ordinary to the casual observer\, but it can tell a number of fascinating stories. Firstly\, it is an excellent example of the oldest building materials in the Cambridge area\, formed of stones that were dug out of the surrounding fields in order to facilitate ploughing. This “field stone” was used for building until the Black Death\, so is now found only in the oldest churches in the region. It was also used for making roads and\, due to its durability and cheapness\, has commonly been recycled many times: the Great Gate cobbles\, for example\, were re-purposed in the sixteenth century from an ancient road. Even a cursory examination of the cobbles shows a huge variety of different rock types – this is because the stones in the Cambridgeshire fields were deposited from glaciers and brought by the ice from hundreds of miles away. Amongst these different rock types are lithologies that can only have been brought from Norway\, so we can use their distribution to map out the flow-lines of the long-departed glaciers. In the talk\, I will introduce the various rock types and explain how they formed and what we can deduce about Earth history

SUMMARY:Jane Dottridge - How Geology Controls Groundwater Flow in the Chalk and Other Aquifers.
DESCRIPTION:An aquifer is a saturated\, porous\, permeable stratum or group of strata. Hydrogeological maps give a different view to standard geological maps\, classifying the strata according to their importance as aquifers and dominant type of flow\, through interconnected pore spaces or fractures. But geology\, depositional environment\, diagenesis and structure control aquifer properties and how the groundwater flows. Jane’s talk focusses on the Chalk\, explaining how water flows and examining its properties\, uses\, responses to abstraction\, vulnerability and contaminant movement. \n

SUMMARY:Kevin Purvis - Some Like it Hot – A Near World’s End Experience. The Permo-Triassic Extinction Event
DESCRIPTION:(PTEE) \nThe Permian-Triassic Extinction Event (PTEE) (c. 252 Mya) was the most severe extinction event that the Earth has experienced\, with over 80% of the marine species and 70% of terrestrial species becoming extinct. The extinction event was the result of catastrophic climate change that occurred during a period of Permian warming and resulting in the Triassic Hothouse. The talk will outline the PTEE\, but also the details of minor climate change that occur as perturbations throughout geological history. Analysis of carbonate cements related to plants that grew during the post-extinction period of recovery give an insight into what the surface temperatures were like\, millions of years after the event. The use of U-Pb age dating and isotopic analysis help in our understanding of past climatic change.
